How to Build a Leaf Box for Your Truck

If you own a truck, you know how useful it can be for hauling all sorts of things. And when it comes to fall clean-up, a leaf box can be a real lifesaver. With a leaf box, you can easily collect and transport leaves and other yard debris without the need for multiple trips to the dump. Here’s how to build your own leaf box for your truck.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you start building your leaf box, you’ll need to gather all the necessary materials. You’ll need:

  • 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber, each 6 feet long
  • 2 sheets of 1/2-inch plywood, each 4 feet by 8 feet
  • 1 box of wood screws, 3 inches long
  • 1 box of wood screws, 1 inch long
  • Electric drill
  • Saw
  • Tape measure

Step 2: Cut Your Lumber

Using your saw, cut two of the 2×4 pieces in half, so you have four pieces that are 3 feet long. These will be the corner posts of your leaf box. Cut the other two 2x4s into two pieces each, so you have four pieces that are 4.5 feet long and four pieces that are 1.5 feet long.

Step 3: Build the Frame

Using the 3-foot pieces of lumber as corner posts, build a rectangular frame that is 4 feet wide and 8 feet long. Attach the 4.5-foot pieces of lumber to the top of the frame, one on each side, using the 3-inch wood screws. These will be the supports for your plywood panels.

Step 4: Attach the Plywood Panels

Using the 1-inch wood screws, attach the plywood panels to the frame. Start by attaching one panel to the bottom of the frame, making sure it is flush with the sides and back of the frame. Then attach the other panel to the top of the frame, making sure it is flush with the sides and front of the frame. You should now have a box with an open top.

Step 5: Add Handles

Using the remaining 1.5-foot pieces of lumber, attach two handles to the sides of the leaf box, near the top. These will make it easier to lift and move the leaf box when it’s full.

Step 6: Optional: Add a Tarp

If you want to keep your leaves and debris from flying out of the leaf box while you’re driving, you can add a tarp. Simply buy a tarp that is slightly larger than the dimensions of your leaf box, and secure it to the top of the box using bungee cords or rope.

That’s it! With your new leaf box, you’ll be able to easily collect and transport leaves and other yard debris. Happy cleaning!
