How to Put Jumper Cables on a Ford Escape

When your Ford Escape won’t start, the culprit could be a dead battery. Jump starting your car with jumper cables is one of the easiest ways to get your car back on the road quickly. Here’s how to put jumper cables on a Ford Escape.

Step 1: Find a Good Samaritan and Jumper Cables

The first thing you need to do is find someone who is willing to help you jump start your car. Look for a driver who has a car with a healthy battery. Once you’ve found someone, ask them to park their car close to yours so that the jumper cables can reach both batteries. After that, get your jumper cables and make sure they are in good working condition.

Step 2: Position the Cars and Turn Off the Ignition

Before you attach the jumper cables, make sure both cars are in park or neutral, with the parking brake on. Turn off the ignition on both cars and any electronics, such as radios, lights, and air conditioning systems.

Step 3: Attach the Jumper Cables

Attach the positive (red) jumper cable to the positive terminal on your Ford Escape’s battery. The positive terminal is usually marked with a plus (+) sign. Next, attach the other end of the positive jumper cable to the positive terminal on the other car’s battery.

Attach the negative (black) jumper cable to the negative terminal on the other car’s battery. The negative terminal is usually marked with a minus (-) sign. Finally, attach the other end of the negative jumper cable to an unpainted metal surface on your Ford Escape, such as a bolt or the engine block. Do not attach the negative cable to the negative terminal on your car’s battery.

Step 4: Start the Cars and Disconnect the Jumper Cables

Start the car with the healthy battery and let it run for a few minutes. Then, try to start your Ford Escape. If it starts, let it run for a few minutes to recharge the battery. After that, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you attached them. Remove the negative cable from your car first, then the negative cable from the other car. Next, remove the positive cable from the other car’s battery, and finally, remove the positive cable from your car’s battery.

Step 5: Safety Precautions

Jump starting a car can be dangerous if you don’t follow some basic safety precautions. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe:

  • Wear protective gloves and eyewear to prevent injury.
  • Do not smoke or light a cigarette near the battery as it may ignite the gases produced by the battery.
  • Do not touch the jumper cables while the cars are running.
  • Do not let the jumper cables touch each other while they are attached to the batteries.

Now that you know how to put jumper cables on a Ford Escape, you can get back on the road quickly if your battery dies. Just remember to follow these steps carefully and take safety precautions.
